Mind Ur Buddy
Mind Ur Buddy is a suicide prevention and intervention training program designed and delivered by Pieta House’s trained and accredited therapists.
The essence of the program is to provide members of staff within an organization or members of a club with the tools to manage a situation where an employee, friend, team mate or family member is in need of support of Pieta House.
We facilitate training for up to 20 participants at a time and following the training, participants will be recognized by their peers as the ‘go-to’ person within the organization should the need ever arise. The organization will then publicly promote Mind Ur Buddy and the Buddy Support Personnel (BSP) in their role.
Mind Ur Buddy is a bespoke training program individually tailored to meet the specific needs of every organization we work with. The core aims of the program are to educate the participants about suicide in Ireland. This ranges from the history of suicide, statistics, triggers that can lead to suicide, signs a person may display and, crucially, how to manage a conversation with a person in distress. It is key to stress, we are not training people to be therapists, we are training them to be short term helpers, a conduit between a person in distress and Pieta House.
A cornerstone of Mind Ur Buddy is that Pieta House provides BSP’s with a direct telephone line into Pieta House. Receptionists are briefed that any calls coming through this line are in relation to Mind Ur Buddy. The benefits of this are that we will fast-track Mind Ur Buddy calls for assessment. It is our aim that once a Mind Ur Buddy call and referral is made, we can have a person in for assessment within 24hrs.
Where required, Pieta House can provide follow up supervision to groups we have trained. This can be availed of on a yearly basis. Supervision consists of a 2 hour session with a Pieta House therapist to work through any issues that may have arisen over the course being a Buddy Support. It can also act as a refresher to the training.
